If you have ever seen the movie Anna and the King, you know a little something about the unique history of Thailand, a country once known as Siam. During a semester abroad in Thailand, you may start to appreciate why the musical The King and I is banned in that country as well.

Thai means “freemen,” and the name is appropriate. During the 19th Century, the region of Southeast Asia known as Indo-China (so-called because Indian and Chinese cultural influences are nearly equally strong) was being carved up by Great Britain and France as colonies of empire; Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos ultimately wound up under French control while Burma fell under British rule.

During the mid 19th Century, King Rama IV – also known as Mongkut – was the ruler of Siam. He is known today as the king who brought Siam into the Industrial Age; his reforms and considerable political skills kept Siam from becoming yet another European colony, for which he holds a place in Thai history similar to that of Thom Jefferson or Abraham Lincoln in U.S. history. (Incidentally, King Mongkut never offered war elephants to President Lincoln for the Union Army during the Civil War; he had actually written to Lincoln’s predecessor, James Buchanan, but his letter didn’t arrive until Lincoln had taken office.)

Thailand is located very close to Malaysia; in fact, part of the country is located on the Malay Peninsula. When you spend a semester abroad in Malaysia, you’ll find yet another unique culture with its own fascinating history. However, while Thailand is one of the oldest nations in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is one of the newest, having come into existence less than fifty years ago in 1963. It is actually a federation of fourteen smaller countries that had at one time been part of the British Empire. (Singapore left the federation after only two years.)

In addition to South Pacific, Chinese and Indian cultural influences, you’ll also find much that derives from Arab countries; Islam is the predominant religion of Malaysia and has been for centuries. You may remember stories about “Sindbad the Sailor;” these stories were based on the voyages of sea-faring Arab merchants who brought their culture and religion to the peoples of the Southwest Pacific.

Despite the many cultural differences, you’ll find when you study abroad in Malaysia that the country is much like the U.S. in terms of diversity; in addition to Malays (who are also indigenous to the Philippines), there are many ethnic Chinese and Indians; although Islam is practiced by 60 percent of the people and is the nation’s official religion, there are also substantial numbers of Buddhists, Christians and Hindus as well as a small Jewish community.

Solar power – the dream of renewable energy is realized; how far we go now is all up to the limits of current technology and our imagination… and training. There are many levels of training, from photovoltaic (PV) panel installation to research and development, and all will come in handy in the very near future.

The demand for solar energy has grown about 30% per year over the past fifteen years. While the growth rate has slowed somewhat from its initial boom, it hasn’t levelled at all. Even though the U.S. economy began struggling in early/mid 2008, solar energy companies topped the list of the 2008 largest venture capital investments; Nanosolar Inc., a leader in the development of solar-cell technology, topped the list with a whopping $299,999,700 in capital investments. New California legislation, passed last summer, allows solar photovoltaic systems to be bought on a loan, paid for by various county and city general fund tax dollars. According to the North County Times, “homeowners can finance solar installations over twenty years instead of forking out tens of thousands of dollars up front.”

What does all of this mean for careers in solar power? That training is essential, and the best time for finding solar panel schools to teach you the trade is now. As the demand for solar energy rises, so does the demand for solar installations, which, in turn, increases the demand for solar installers. Schools that teach this trade are few and far between, and fill up quickly.

Why? In general, solar panel schools advertise to businesses instead of the individual. The amount of training, as well as the hands-on portion, necessitates smaller “classroom” sizes. Consider a single mid-sized corporation with three hundred electricians that want to move into solar panel installation. Those three hundred trainees will quickly fill even multiple classrooms for the term they’ve chosen .

Does this mean that an individual can’t find placement in solar schools? Absolutely not. For most training facilities, the major prerequisite is that you have knowledge in electrical systems, general contracting or fields related to solar PV installation. These courses are usually training intensive, with dedicated teachers on hand to guide the students through each step. A good grasp on the technology through a well-constructed technical training program is always a good bet, especially when dealing with electrical charges!

Training from solar panel schools isn’t all about installation, however. By the time you’re done with just the entry level NABCEP Knowledge of PV Systems course, you will learn enough about solar panels to:

•recognize individual PV systems and how to integrate them
•have a working knowledge of policies and regulations

Be very skeptical about an online school that does not require field experience. Most probably, this online school does not meet the state licensing requirements.

Payment scheme

Watch out for online schools or distance programs that require you to pay the whole amount of your tuition up front in lump sum. Distance schools are susceptible to high dropout rates and these schools are aware of this fact. Some of these dubious schools take advantage of this knowledge and get students to pay for the whole tuition fee and then refuse a refund when after one course the student realizes that the program is not for him or her.
